Pretty fun announcements right now from Framework!

Wow. I just went to their website and I got a cloudflare message saying
Your estimated wait time is 15 minutes.
We are experiencing a high volume of traffic and using a virtual queue to limit the amount of users on the website at the same time. This will ensure you have the best possible online experience.
Yeah, that's to be expected. I think they enabled some DDoS protection feature or whatnot.
I preorderd a desktop.

What's the shipping ETA and let us know how it performs!

Batch 2, Q3 right now. I tried to get in Batch 1 but I went outside to walk my dog and my site waiting list reset even though I had a cart.
I'd love for split ortholinear keyboards to be standard on laptops
It would be hard to do on a 13", but a 16" would have enough space
I wonder why this is really necessary. Maybe it's a marketing/perception thing??

Heck yeah! The second the new keycaps release for the Framework 16 I'm all over them.
I don't know Adam. Probably some angle of marketing to it. The whole "scarcity" thing. Also it's better than being served some silly unicorn 503 page and hammering the backend unnecessarily.
I can't imagine the waitlist being necessary to browse the static content describing the product. But it might be to indirectly limit the pressure on their shopping cart, payment processor, shipping calculation services....
There's exactly one Framework desktop powering the entire website and online store :P
Darn it, I really wish I could justify buying one
Maybe if my other computers suffer some sort of accident...
Heck yessss, love to see Framework going strong. I got a 13" mid last year and have been loving it.
Totally agree. That's one of the reasons I bought the desktop. I don't want my favorite restaurant to close when I haven't eaten there in over a year.
OMFG, I've been looking for a replacement for my PixelBook, and this is almost perfect: https://community.frame.work/t/introducing-the-framework-laptop-12/65009
If only it had an AMD variant
When they talk gen 2, are the framework 13 components all still compatible? Looked like it from the shop but constantly curious about how they manage to keep it up

Yep!

I miss my Lenovo x220. IMO 12" is the perfect ultra portable laptop size.
Even though it's rare for me to use one, it's occasionally extra useful to have something with stylus support
The other option I've been eyeing is the MNT Reform Next: https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next/
If I absolutely had to replace a laptop this year, it'd be a very difficult choice :)
Trying to answer for myself "why get a Framework Desktop instead of building your own"
It seems like one of the main advantages is the RAM is accessible by the GPU? So for AI/ML type work that could be very useful
Is there something else I'm missing?
It's a nice mid point for those who want a customized machine but don't want to research and select every possible hardware option out there.
The desktop sits in a different location on the scale of customizability, compared to the laptop.
I don't think you're missing anything else Lars. For me I like that Framework is using standard form factors so I could technically swap boards if I wanted and treat the Framework as a case. More importantly though, Framework committed to a case design and will continue to make parts that fit well in that case.
I priced a build on PCPartPicker last night on my other machine. AM5 9700X, 128 GiB RAM, B650 board, 7700 XT GPU, SFX PSU, and some Cooler Master case. It came in at just over $2,000.00.
I could go with that build if I wanted but then I'll need to double check all the parts to make sure my GPU actually fits in my case and the cooler clears the case as well. Sure then I get the ability to upgrade my CPU, RAM, or board separately but really how often are people upgrading just the CPU or just the RAM? I can't imagine it's that often. Usually you'll just be going to the next socket or RAM type.
